Heat & Dehydration

This session on heat illness and dehydration with Dr. Matshediso Kgamane will provide a practical, field-focused approach to recognizing and managing environmental heat-related conditions in wilderness and resource-limited settings. Drawing on her global experience in expedition and austere medicine, Dr. Kgamane will explore the pathophysiology, early warning signs, and progression of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and fluid imbalance. Participants will learn how to assess hydration status, implement effective prevention strategies, and initiate timely interventions using both standard and improvised resources when definitive care may be hours away. Emphasis will be placed on decision-making in remote environments, including when to treat in place versus initiate evacuation. This lecture is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and medical providers alike, equipping learners with the knowledge and confidence to respond to heat-related emergencies and protect themselves and others in challenging environments.
